Zubin Mehta (71) is the Music Director for Life of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, which is ranked among 10 world’s best orchestras, appointed him Music Advisor in 1968, then Music Director in 1977 and Music Director for Life in 1981.
The famous Indian conductor is sentimentally attached to Belgrade, because he started his career at the Belgrade’s Philharmonic Orchestra long time ago in 1958.

He visited Belgrade with the Los Angeles Philharmonic both in 1967 and 1976 and he was also among the first artists who greeted the October’s 2000 Changes.
He last performed in Belgrade two years ago, when he performed with the Munich Philharmonic in the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra’s cycle of concerts Homage to Hans Swarowsky.
On that occasion, he enclosed 30,000$ to the Belgrade’s Philharmonic Orchestra Foundation, which was named after him.
In 1936 the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra was founded by Bronisław Huberman, a Polish violinist, who wanted to save Jewish musicians in front of upcoming Nazism in Europe, and the first concert of this Orchestra was conducted by Arturo Toscanini.
Since Israel gained its independence in 1948, the orchestra has gone by the name of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. It performs more than 200 concerts a year.
