In late 1987, bassist Srđan Sacher (ex Haustor), saxophonist and keyboardist Jurij Novoselić (ex Film) and drummer Srđan Gulić (ex Haustor) formed Dee Dee Mellow, combining rock, jazz, funk and ethno sounds and devoting themselves mostly to experimental music.

Alongside their own songs “Uhu”, “Kruha i jogurta”, “Capri” and “Tibetanski omastir”, they also performed covers of Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins and John Lurie, as well as Hungarian and Native American folk songs, as documented on their cassette “Live”, recorded at a concert at Studio M in Novi Sad and produced by Ivan Vlatković. With a series of cheerful and witty club shows, Dee Dee Mellow were a genuine, unpretentious breath of fresh air on the scene.

Since the band was a side project between their regular engagements - Novoselić played in Disciplina kičme and Sacher in Vještice - they stopped working in the late 1980s. It was not until 1993 that Novoselić revived the group with guitarist and writer Davor Slamnig (ex Buldožer), but they performed under the names Disco Mellos or Daddy Mellow. In this new incarnation they were just as unpretentious, covering disco hits of the 1970s, joined on stage by jazz singer Jasna Bilušić, actresses Dubravka Ostojić, Vanja Matujec and Ivana Boban, and a number of musicians from the Zagreb scene.
